Medication Instructions for After Surgery
Use Before Surgery:
- Hibiclens 4% Soap - Antibacterial soap
- Shower twice with this soap the day before surgery and then once on the morning of surgery.
- Mupirocin Ointment - Antibacterial nasal ointment
- Apply a small amount topically to each nostril three times a day for five days before surgery
Use After Surgery:
- Oxycodone/Acetaminophen(Percocet) 10mg/325mg tablet - Start when you begin to feel pain. Utilize this pain medication so that you can participate successfully with physical therapy.
- 1 tablet every 4-6 hours as needed for pain
- Ibuprofen 800mg tablet - If allowed by your medical doctor, this medication will help reduce your pain. Start when you begin to feel pain.
- 1 tablet every 8 hours as needed for pain.
- Aspirin 81mg tablet - For prevention of blood clots. It is safe to take this medication along with ibuprofen. Not to be used if you are already on another blood thinner preoperatively.
- 1 tablet every 12 hours for 6 weeks from surgery, start night of surgery.
If you are on another blood thinner prior to surgery:
- Plavix – resume Plavix the day following surgery and add a single aspirin 81mg tablet daily for 6 weeks from surgery.
- Eliquis/Xarelto/Coumadin – Eliquis 2.5mg every 12 hours for 3 days starting the day after surgery followed by resumption of normal Eliquis/Xarelto/Coumadin dosing.
Zofran(Ondansetron) tablet- anti-nausea medication
- 1 tablet every 8 hours as needed for nausea.
